It was a surreal experience to get to work on this project. As property owners and managers of rentals, Joey and I have been talking about flipping for years, but never pulled the trigger. But the moment we spoke our intentions out loud, the universe answered with an opportunity we just couldn’t pass up.
This is a special project, because it is our first fixer upper. Having our family come together to pitch in on everything from choosing materials to picking out succulents was so meaningful.
The home, tucked between the historical Cal Heights and highly-coveted Virginia Country Club area, had been converted into a 4 bedroom, 2 bath years prior and while it had the bones, by the time we got our hands on it, it was in desperate need of a makeover. The goal here was to make it as spacious as possible without drastically changing the original floor plan or square footage and to make sure it felt more open and airy.
DESIGN INSPIRATION
The inspiration materials I used to reimagine the style of the home
I absolutely love the farmhouse style (thanks Joanna Gaines), so I knew that I wanted to infuse bits of modern farmhouse character into this transitional style home. I was inspired by shades of bright whites, brushed nickel, and colorful succulents that balanced with natural elements like Carrara marble, stacked stone and more modern elementals such as quartz and redwoods.
KITCHEN

This kitchen couldn’t be more beautiful. It’s the perfect mix of simple elegance with modern functionality. The Carrara marble backsplash, large quartz peninsula and elongated window steal the show.
LIVING ROOM + ENTRY

Rather than keep the small enclosed dining room we opened up the floorplan, made the fireplace the focal point, and added a large dual pane window to capitalize on the view overlooking the mature tree-lined street.

I wanted to expand the master bedroom to make it seem more spacious by opening up the window that overlooked the backyard and turning it into a large sliding glass door the leads onto a beautiful redwood deck.
EXTERIOR SPACE
Style Goals | Give the exterior a modern, updated look that exudes playful pops of color
I never pass up an opportunity to dress up the exterior of a home. Wanting a fresh modern feel, we added a bold pop of color on the front door that really gives the home a new personality. We balanced the dark gray exterior with colorful succulents, lush grass, and white quartz rocks.
For our first fixer-upper, I could not have asked for a better home to reimagine. We transformed this house into a modern, spacious, tech-friendly home that any young family would enjoy. The large kitchen island is great for entertaining family and friends, the large windows bring an open airy feel, and the Carrara marble bathrooms with their farmhouse finishes bring the touch of elegance that is sure to wow! There are so many things I love about the space, but my favorite has to be the plum door. It’s modern and bold and gives the house the perfect pop of color without being too overbearing. We hope this home serves as the perfect backdrop for the beautiful journey to come. Welcome home!
